Quietly Useful

Just Scribbles

There's a strange freedom in no longer needing credit to feel fulfilled. In understanding that impact and attention are not the same thing.

I've realized something about myself over the years that used to make me question my worth.

I am not first-place girl.

When I was younger, people would ask why I didn't "do more" with my talents, and for a long time, I thought maybe they were right. Maybe I was supposed to chase bigger titles, louder rooms, more recognition, more money, more attention.

But the older I get, the more I realize I was never wired for the spotlight.

I am wired for support.

I quietly pay attention. That's my thing.

I listen carefully when people talk about their struggles, frustrations, goals, or dreams, and my brain immediately starts looking for ways to help. Ways to smooth the path. Ways to solve the problem they haven't solved yet.

I do it with my husband all the time. I listen to him talk about work, stress, systems, inefficiencies, and before long I'm thinking of ways to make his days easier, lighter, smoother. Not because anyone asked me to. Because I love the feeling of helping carry the load for people I love.

I do the same thing with friends, family, businesses, strangers, ideas, and places.

I notice things.

I notice potential.

I notice gaps.

I notice opportunities.

I notice where encouragement is needed.

I notice where someone is close to giving up.

If I'm being really honest, I love being needed.

Not in a dramatic martyr kind of way. Just in a deeply human way.

There is something beautiful about knowing your presence made something better.

I've learned I don't necessarily want to be the one standing on top of the mountain holding the trophy. That looks exhausting to me. Lonely sometimes too.

But I love being right behind you.

I love being the reason you ran faster because I was quietly on your heels.

I love being the one who thought of the idea you turned into something incredible.

I love writing the piece about your business that makes people finally see your heart.

I love creating the seamless website your clients rave about.

I love helping someone polish their dream until they feel brave enough to carry it out loud.

Most of those things will never have my name attached to them.

And that's okay.

Because I know I was part of it.

Even if the world doesn't.

There's a strange freedom in no longer needing credit to feel fulfilled. In understanding that impact and attention are not the same thing.

Some people are meant to lead from the front.

Some people are meant to build quietly from the sides.

Some people are meant to steady the ladder while others climb.
